Scottsdale, Ariz. - (August 28, 2006)
- Labor Day (Sept. 4) marks the end of the summer driving season, so now is
the time for motorists to prepare their vehicles before they hit the road
one last time. Discount Tire, America's largest tire store, reminds motorist
that tire care should be a top priority on every pre-planning checklist before
any road trip. |
Beginning Aug. 14, Discount Tire will provide free tire inspections and a
"tire maintenance kit" to all drivers at more than 600 retail store outlets
throughout the U.S. Discount Tire's technicians can address any tire safety
issues before drivers begin their Labor Day travels. Visits usually take no
longer than five minutes. The tire maintenance kit includes an air pressure
gauge, tread depth gauge and a brochure with safety tips that focus on pressure,
alignment, rotation and tread, the four essential areas of proper tire maintenance. |

Last year, AAA estimated that 37.2 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more
from home during the Labor Day weekend. Eighty-four percent or about 31.2 million
travelers went by motor vehicle. Many of these travelers chose to cap off the
summer with two- to five-day road trips to make the most of their vacation
budgets and time with family and friends. |
Discount Tire is providing free tire inspection services and tools to ensure
that travelers are safe on the road this holiday. Most American motorists are
unaware of the overall impact that simple maintenance has on tire life, fuel
economy and safety. |
According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, improper tire maintenance
such as under-inflated tires result in 33,000 injuries and 660 fatalities each
year on U.S. roads. Discount Tire provides free tire air pressure and tread
depth checks by trained tire technicians at all of its retail stores nationwide. |

Discount Tire's Five Tire Tips for Labor Day Road Trips |
1. Check Air Pressure Before You Hit the Road
The Rubber Manufacturers Association reports that under-inflated tires are a
tire's number one enemy. Low tire pressure decreases fuel economy approximately
two-to-three miles per gallon. Check air-pressure before long trips to ensure
safety and to save money. |
2. Rotate Tires Before You Go
Rotating tires regularly is an essential part of maintaining tire performance.
Regular tire rotation achieves uniform wear for all tires on the vehicle.
Tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles for optimal wear. It's important to
note that actual tread wear performance can vary tremendously according to the
tire's real-world use: variations in driving habits, service practices (most
importantly air pressure maintenance), road conditions and climate affect tire life. |
3. Check Wheel Alignment Before You Go
Alignment is a key maintenance factor in getting the most wear and performance from
vehicle tires. In addition, wheel alignment provides safe and predictable vehicle
control as well as a smooth and comfortable ride that is free of pulling or vibration. |
4. Remove Excess Weight
The heavier a vehicle is the more energy it takes to move. Excess weight can take an
unnecessary toll on fuel economy and tire wear. Avoid keeping extra items in your
vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle can reduce
fuel economy by up to two percent per gallon. |
5. Check Air Pressure During the Trip
Air pressure in a tire tends to increase in warm weather and decrease in cold weather.
The pressure changes one pound for every 10 degrees of temperature change. For accurate
pressure, check pressure when tires are cool. The specific inflation pressure number
is noted by the vehicle manufacturer and can be found inside the glove box or fuel door,
on the vehicle placard located on the driver's doorpost or in the owner's manual. |
